Andy Warhol "Car Crash"
Warhol’s ‘Green Car Crash’, is a 90 x 80-inch synthetic polymer work with silkscreen ink and acrylic on linen. The work features a photograph by John Whitehead appropriated from a June issue of ‘Newsweek’: the burning aftermath of a police chase in Seattle. The car overturned after being pursed at 60 m/h, expelled its driver with enough force to impale him on a nearby utility pole and burst into flames. The work was produced using the silkscreen technique by Warhol and his assistant Gerard Malanga in 1963 in a decommissioned firehouse in New York. The image is part of a series of ‘Death and Disaster’ works created by Warhol from the sixties onwards, featuring distressing and at times very brutal imagery appropriated from documentary and media sources.
