Feng Chen Wang

Written and Edited by: Nathaniel Enriquez

Feng Chen Wang is a Chinese-born, London-based designer at the forefront of a new generation of fashion talent emerging from China. Feng studied MA Fashion Menswear at the prestigious Royal College of Art, London, graduating in 2015, launching her eponymous label the same year. She made her runway debut with a strikingly colored and tailored Spring Summer 16 collection at New York Fashion Week, earning a nomination for the LVMH Prize.

Since then, the brand has been a permanent and celebrated fixture on the official London Fashion Week Men’s schedule with her most recent AW20 collection a finalist of the International Woolmark Prize. Feng moved to the official Paris Fashion Week calendar for Spring Summer 2023. Design is very important to Feng, her style is very multidimensional, western meets eastern, past meets future, street style mixed with high end fashion, but also traditional inspirations. She describes her approach as “future-modern, contemporary, emotional and multidimensional”. Feng focuses on technical deconstruction, creating unisex clothing that is functional but at the same time conceptual and personal, drawing on her life experiences and Chinese heritage.

Although Feng is a menswear designer, she explains that as a woman designing for men, she wants “both men and women to wear my clothes and in this way I disrupt the system” using small details such as “3D lettering or internal constructions that no one sees” to “explore the bigger concepts.” Mixing a unique vision and combination of craft and concept, Wang has zeroed in on “a process which explores what lies beneath the surface.” And by doing so, she takes fashion to a whole new dimension.

Her menswear offerings have garnered critical acclaim, with particular attention paid to her unique directional outerwear styles. Anorak, bomber, and puffer jackets in powdered pastel tones and glossy finishes use volume, selective proportional exaggeration, and textural accents to great effect, de-centering the conventions of streetwear staples to offer a refresher in true originality. Reflecting a similar detail-augmenting approach, hoodies, sweatshirts, and turtlenecks feature an auteurial take on drop-shoulder silhouetting, collapsing masculine tailoring clichés and intimating a sense of gender-fluid futurism. Striking, saturated statement pieces work well in contrast with the more subdued monochromes seen elsewhere in her collections.

Feng is sought after for collaborations, and has recently worked on exciting projects with Levi's and Converse, bringing her unique and artistic sensibility to those projects. The business team operates in offices/studios in both Shanghai and London, taking advantage of Feng's global connections.

The new collection campaign is, in signature Feng Chen Wang style, jointly inspired by ancient Chinese painting scrolls and polyptych paintings of the Renaissance period. A series of images that naturally flow from one to the other to form a scrolling, interconnected collective of individuals. Each image is sliced and seems unfinished on its own, yet harmoniously unites to the next, in the same way as how the Feng Chen Wang’s signature deconstructionism design technique is expressed on each garment. The unfinished, highlighted. The incomplete, embraced.

This season, the designer reinvents a signature Feng Chen Wang design element, the phoenix motif – which translates to ‘feng’ in Chinese, and is a symbol of luck. Appearing alongside the ‘FCW’ logo, this graphic features on jackets and jumpers, brooches and scarves.

“This season, I love the idea of embracing and finding beauty in our interconnectedness, in nature, societies and our own selves. Perfectly incomplete. Imperfectly complete.” notes Feng.
